What really is ear training?

OK, so two years ago I started teaching myself the keyboard. Learned sheet music notation on the Internet and practiced slowly on the keyboard. Then I was introduced to ear training and and I started working with the ear training program on the website Play Piano Today. I practiced in the summer holidays, but unfortunately because of major exams this year, neglected it for about half the year. Now I’ve started again, but the thing is, I’ve never made it beyond Level 1 (of intervals). Sometimes I see some connection and the sounds start making sense but usually I seem to be going on guess work. There is no way that I’m going to learn the keyboard this way. What’s wrong with me? Am I tone deaf or what?
And what is the importance of mastering blues, and majors and minors (chords)? I’m really confused.
Any help will be really appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Ear training is about teaching yourself (ears) to recognize specific sounds. Some people are better at it than others. If you have the ability to distinguish between tones, this is usually always a useful practice. But for most people, learning to play and recognize specific mechanics takes a WHOLE lot of practice, and a lot of different methods.
