Read This Before Setting Up a Family Budget

Financial issues are a common reason why people get divorced. Neither one of you likes how the other spends most of the money. Maybe she’s a shopaholic and buys more than the family can possibly ever use, or he could hold a tight rein on the purse strings and not provide the things his family needs. Lack of money seems to be the main problem, although there are certainly other reasons. Not having enough money can be really stressful which is why is strains a marriage.

It’s best for couples in this situation to set up a budget so they can learn how to use their money properly. There should be a place setup to hold all of the paid bills and receipts. These bills could conveniently fit into a photo storage box. Keeping everything organized will help out a lot. It will especially be useful when it comes time to file taxes. You may want to consider having three boxes of bills since the IRS recommends that you keep all paperwork for at least three years.

Your computer can be another great budgeting tool. You could use a spreadsheet to help make your budget. Some of the various columns could include entertainment, credit cards, groceries, housing, miscellaneous, etc. The left side of the spreadsheet should consist of the months of the year. You can easily track your expenses using this spreadsheet. At the end of every month you’ll be able to total the expenses under each tab in your file box and place the totals under the appropriate heading. At the beginning of the new year, all you need to do is total the various columns. It will be much easier to file taxes if you have everything calculated already.
