Printed Music Books
Posted in News on 02/02/2003 05:56 pm by adminWhat is a good type of portable scanner for scanning books?
My area library has a large selection of printed music books in the reference section that are not available for checkout. I’m looking for a scanner that is portable and can be powered by a laptop computer so I will be able to take scans at the library.
Looking online I’ve seen both the photo and wand type of scanners, will either of these serve this purpose?
My concern is being able to scan the pages of the bulky music books.
My computer is a three year old Apple laptop.
Consider a regular collapsible tripod & a digital camera with manual aperture settings capability & disabling the flash.
Depending on the quality of the camera, it could be used in a fairly low light situation, otherwise you would have to have a light source. The manual setting of a small aperture (f/8) will provide a huge depth of focus (like a pin-hole camera) clarity with longer exposure times (2 to 8 seconds or automatic aperture priority) & possibly ISO settings (100 to 800 or automatic ISO). The use of an auto timer & the tripod will prevent motion blur during the long exposure times & improve image clarity.
Many cameras will not focus in low light situations, so you will need to do manual focusing in these cases, but the clarity should be fine if the camera focal length is within the tripod to subject matter distance.
If you already have a decent camera & tripod, you could see if this could work for you without any extra expenses. The size of even some bulky SLR cameras is not that huge either. All have their own battery source. The better ones have lithium rechargeable batteries.
